Third Christmas

He comes down the stairs a little cautious.
Not at all like I thought he would be.
Where is the great expectation,
The surprise and the Christmas glee.

Each step he takes with hesitation.
Not sure of what is waiting below.
Something is very much different
From what was there only hours ago.

Could one night's sleep cause such changes
In the room with the tree full of lights?
Where once only a few pretty packages.
Now a wonderland of childhood delights.

Who could have caused such a thing to happen
To this room that he likes to play in.
A wonderful world full of toys and games...
At last it begins to sink in.

Then fast down the steps in excitement.
He knows that everything is for him.
That jolly ol' elf with the flying reindeer
Has been by to see him again.
